Depending upon your home, and it’s current HVAC system, you may find yourself facing a number of choices when it comes time to buy a new air-conditioner. Only you can decide which options are the most important to you, but to help you in making that decision, here is a list of considerations. Many of the items can be clicked if you want to find out more.
- Size. You will not have a choice in the size of your unit; you should have a unit that is sized to appropriately heat and cool your home.
- Efficiency. The more efficient an air-conditioner is, the lower your power bills. Also, when there are rebates available, these are typically offered on higher efficiency units. These money-saving options may assist in offsetting the price difference between a standard a/c unit and a more efficient one.
- Warranty. How long does the warranty last? Which parts does it cover? Is there a labor warranty? What are my obligations to make sure a warranty claim is not denied?
- Equipment Options & Features. How quiet is the unit? Does it come with any Indoor Air Quality features?
- Refrigerant Type. R-22 (“old freon”) vs R-410A (“new freon”)
- Quality Installation. So much more on this topic is coming soon.
- Rebates and Tax Credits. Incentives are frequently offered on higher efficiency units.
- Price. This is usually one of the most important factors when selecting an air-conditioning unit, but I mention it last because so many of the factors above will cause the price to vary.
